We all know what bank holidays are: a day for you to relax, skip school and actually have a good night's rest! But do you know where they really come from and why we have them?
Starting in 1871, by the Bank Holidays Act, bank holidays started as a day for banks and financial businesses to take some time off. Before this, banks already closed on certain days, like religious festivals or royal events, but there wasn't an actual holiday where they could actually just breathe! This is where the infamous bank holidays come in.
This positively affected the workers, as we all love a bit of increased leisure time, spending time with family and being able to relax for a day. Though it wasn't long before schools and other types of businesses soon took this opportunity to rest, closing their doors as well.
This bank holiday (and for future ones), make sure you take your rest. It's a holiday for a reason! Take a walk, go running, read a book or even try something new.
