International Firefighter's Day

What is International Firefighter's Day?
International Firefighter's Day is to celebrate and remember the lives of those who have kept us safe. It's a day to thank them for putting their lives on the line and paying the ultimate price.

For International Firefighter's Day, Maggie, my assistant, and I ventured to our local fire station. Eager to learn more about their day-to-day efforts in keeping our streets safe, we spoke with Mark Brothwood, one of the many dedicated firefighters at Ellesmere Port Fire Station. We learnt more about how to get into firefighting, (which Mark described as an amazing job) what they done to celebrate International Firefighter's Day and what the best part of his job is.

Maggie Cliff, assistant, and Mark Brothwood, firefighter.

During the interview, Maggie asked:

Have you got any advice for the people of Ellesmere Port who are wanting to go in to firefighting?
Mark told us that "firefighting is an amazing job" and if anybody is interested in joining a fire station, visit cheshirefire.gov.uk.
He told us the three types of stations: whole-time stations, on-call stations and crewed stations.

What's the best part of your job as a firefighter?
Mark said that the best part about his job is that every call is different. He told us that he would go to a car crash, and then go to another; but everything is different about it. He said "the fuel is something you have to look at, is anybody trapped inside and how are they going to get them out. Each incident is different and they have to assess how each one needs to be sorted.

Are you doing anything special to mark International Firefighter's Day?
We got told that at 12 o'clock, the station crew went outside and did a one minute silence to remember those who have dedicated their everything toward saving people.
