When we think of combat, we may think of a sport like boxing or a fight with swords — but what does it actually mean?
The answer is that there isn’t just one form of combat. There are many different types, divided into several categories. Let’s take a look.
Unarmed Combat
Unarmed combat is when you do not use any weapons. A good way to group many forms of unarmed combat is with the term MMA, which stands for Mixed Martial Arts — a combination of multiple fighting techniques.
Some examples include:
Boxing, where you can only use your hands to punch and defend.
Kickboxing, which adds more complex techniques and allows the use of legs as well.
Grappling, where fighters do not use punching or kicking. Instead, they try to make their opponent submit using holds and submission techniques.
Armed Combat
Armed combat involves using weapons, and it can focus on a variety of different tools used in different ways.
For example:
Kendo, a Japanese martial art where practitioners use wooden swords to duel.
Ancient European Martial Arts, which incorporate weapons such as swords and daggers.
Why People Practice Combat
Combat sports and martial arts can be practiced for many reasons. They help people stay fit, build discipline, have fun, and learn self-defense, which is widely recommended and considered very beneficial.
