Whitby Road Closure for Active Travel Route Implementation

A main road, Whitby Road, will be closed for 13 weeks so that new active travel routes can be implemented to improve the connection between Ellesmere Port railway station and the town centre. The busy Ellesmere Port road will be closed from the 20th of January to the 10th of April.

The works come after a survey completed by residents in autumn 2023. Over 220 people took part in the online survey, and there were more than 100 comments from people at the drop-in sessions at the market.

The plans will mean that it will become easier for residents to cycle, walk and wheel from the Ellesmere Port Town Centre. As well as these works, other plans are to be carried out around Ellesmere Port, which can be viewed on the Cheshire West & Chester Council website.

The council says that the route will create a 'safer route' and create a more accessible route from EP Railway Train Station and the Town Centre. The council also say that there will be places to store your bikes near the town centre in summer 2026, with some locations around the new market.

Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said last month: "Improvements to Cromwell Road mark the start of the third phase of the transformation of Ellesmere Port town centre, including much-needed upgrades to the Cromwell Road/Wellington Road North junction. Some disruption is inevitable with work like this, but we’ve done everything possible to minimise this. The regeneration project is the biggest investment in the town centre in decades, made possible by Cheshire West & Chester Council. It includes the extensive work at Ellesmere Port Market that will be completed next autumn, and sites along Coronation Road are being prepared for much-needed quality new homes for local people, along with the new site where the old Civic Offices were. Careful planning has ensured Ellesmere Port Market and the wider town centre can remain open throughout this project. Please continue to support your favourite traders and businesses as work progresses," Cheshire Live reports.
