Today, 22nd June 2026, Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has resigned after pressure from over 100 Labour MPs began to take their toll. Keir Starmer had been in office for just under two years, and in those two years he has overseen a period of significant political debate, introducing a range of domestic and international policies while facing ongoing scrutiny from both political opponents and members of his own party.
In Ellesmere Port, we will not yet see an impact on schools, healthcare, council operations or local services, but we may see an impact on jobs, transport and investment across the North West if future policies change. In the next couple of weeks, we expect to see Labour MPs compete for the role of leader of the Labour Party. So far, many potential candidates are being discussed, such as Andy Burnham, Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner.
The MP for our constituency, Justin Madders, remains an MP regardless of who becomes Labour leader or Prime Minister unless he decides to resign before the next general election. If he does resign, die or is disqualified, it will trigger a by-election.
Councillors across Ellesmere Port will also not be impacted unless they resign, are removed through internal party processes or lose a future election.
As mentioned before, Keir Starmer's resignation as Labour Party leader will mean the Labour Party will have to elect a new leader and possible prime minister, provided they continue to keep a majority in the House of Commons. The MPs named have the possible chance of becoming the prime minister of the United Kingdom if elected by the Labour Party.
Justin Madders has commented on the resignation, saying:
"I would like to thank Keir Starmer for his service to the country following today's announcement that he intends to step down as Prime Minister as part of an orderly transition to a new leader."
"Leading Labour to a landslide election victory after so many had written the party off will undoubtedly rank among his greatest achievements. But he inherited a country weakened by 14 years of Conservative government, a challenge that would have tested any premier."
"There have, of course, been mistakes along the way, as there are with every government. But Keir Starmer and his team have begun the difficult task of rebuilding our country with the aim of improving the lives of working people and creating a fairer, stronger Britain with opportunities for all. That has included landmark improvements to workers' and renters' rights, action to reduce NHS waiting lists and laying the foundations for long-term national renewal."
"Keir Starmer is a decent and principled man who entered politics to serve the public. But at a time when populist and increasingly divisive politics are on the rise, he struggled to connect with enough voters. It is to his credit that he has recognised the need for new leadership and chosen to step aside with dignity, putting the country's interests first."
